There is a special magic in summer's simple pleasures—enjoying colorful, sweet stone fruits, being delighted by fireflies or shooting stars across the night sky, or savoring the wildflowers in our gardens and landscapes.

Summer naturally opens our hearts to gratitude and offers the perfect reminder to practice thankfulness year round.

Portland, Oregon’s “Attitude of Gratitude” mural by artist Fin DAC embodies the idea of enduring gratitude that’s sustained between foundational strength and outer beauty.

She stands 5 stories high with hair composed of more than 1,000 living, breathing plants. Even in the dark her beauty shines bright.

She thrives because of her well-constructed wall. Her true brilliance relies on what’s beneath–a sturdy foundation with a built-in drip irrigation system that keeps her alive.

Insight received—a healthy foundation is essential to our wellbeing
The wall, a longstanding metaphor for skin, protects and nourishes the plants as skin is our body’s primary protective barrier.

Not all walls are created equal. Some like our skin protect. They are essential—the structural support for a vibrant, healthy life while others are restrictive, imposed on us by those who have no right to build them.

Too often, we hold ourselves back unfairly by walls both real and imposed because we forget our agency to choose, to climb, to scale, to care for our boundaries. It’s always in our power to tear down walls imposed on us.

Here’s to building foundations that empower a world that nurtures, inspires and amplifies our best.
